1.3912 / UNS K93603 – ALLOY 36 – INVAR 36 – FeNi36
UNS K93600 / W. Nr. 1.3912 / Alloy 36 / Invar 36 is a binary nickel-iron alloy containing 36% nickel. Very low room temperature thermal expansion coefficient is useful for aerospace composites, length standards, measuring tapes and gauges, precision components and tools for pendulum and thermostat rods. It is also used as a low expansion component in bi-metal strip, cryogenic engineering and laser components.
Fully annealed material is recommended for most uses where 1.3912 / Alloy 36 / Invar 36 alloy will be exposed to a wide range of temperatures. The suitable annealing temperature is 850-900 ° C (1560-1650 ° F) and depends on time, shape and dimensions. Slow cooling is preferred.
Where the highest dimensional stability with minimal expansion is required for materials used in the normal ambient temperature range, the following heat treatment is recommended:
Heating / quenching to 830 ° C (1525 ° F) for 30 minutes plus reheating to 300 ° C (570 ° F) for 1 hour / reheating to 100 ° C (212 ° F) for 48 hours / air cooling.
After this treatment, the alloy must be fully stable at temperatures up to 100 ° C (212 ° F). Protective media should be used during preheating or annealing.
