Martensitic stainless steels can be hardened by rapidly cooling from the austenitizing temperature of about 1038 ° C and then applying an aging heat treatment at temperatures between 482-621 ° C. Since such steels contain less than 0.07% carbon, the martensite formed is not very hard and the actual hardness is obtained by aging (precipitation) reaction. Examples of this group are 17-4PH, 15-5PH and PH13-8Mo type steels.
Usage Area
Used in corrosive environments, high pressure environments, aerospace industry, petrochemistry, chemistry and many industrial areas such as food materials.
Heat Treatment Condition
Various heat treatments are applied to increase the strength of the 15-5 alloy. 15-5 stainless can be subjected to 8 different treatments after heat treatment, H 900, H925, H 1025, H 1075, H1100, H 11550, H 1150 + 1550 and H1150-M.
Forging
Forging should be done meticulously.
Machinability
15-5PHs with all heat treatment conditions can be machined but show the highest yield strength in tool steels in H1150M condition.
Welding
Resistance welding or welding under protective gas should be preferred.
