1.4005 / DIN X12CrS13 – AISI 416 – UNS S41600
1.4005 is 1.4006 where Phosphorus but essentially sulfur is added in controlled amounts to improve machinability, increase machining capability and make this steel easy to use for automated purposes. It shows magnetism in all situations. 1.4005 corrosion resistance and surface finish is lower than 1.4006 due to the addition of sulfur. It is not suitable for severe corasive conditions.
1.4005 is sometimes used unhardened or hardened and highly tempered due to its low cost and machinability.
Martensitic stainless steels are optimized for high hardness, and other properties have been considered to some extent. Fabrication should be done using methods that provide poor weldability and generally allow final hardening and tempering heat treatment. Corrosion resistance is inferior to common austenitic grades, and the useful operating temperature ranges are limited by loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and power loss by over-annealing at high temperatures.
Screw, nut, shaft, armature, parts etc. suitable for productions. Carbide or ceramic tools are recommended for machining. Hot forming temperature: 1100-800ºC.
